Source p. 69, Apr / May 2004 - The Path of TruthWhen you appreciate the wisdom of the Master, and that it survives the centuries, it is disappointing that so few of those who regard themselves as followers of the Christ accept the full implications of those teachings, accept that they can be applied in a practical and demonstrable way in their lives.
If you open your ears to how people are expressing their life's experience you find so many of them talk in a negative vein. They are so attached to their negation that if you question it they take exception. They insist on their reality.
But the Master shows us clearly that we have the power to mould our reality. "If your eye is sound your whole body will be full of light." And the Psalmist before him declares "Thou hast given man the dominion over the works of Thy hands."
How do I exercise my dominion? Standing on my emotional mountain-top and shouting at the top of my voice will not make anything happen, intellectually commanding health to come into my body, happiness into my heart and prosperity into my affairs will not bring about any change. I must have rapport with God's presence, I must be "switched on". Is my whole consciousness, my whole mind and heart, right with God?
And does my God-consciousness include all His creation, my neighbour? I hear so many destructive expressions, horrible criticisms of others. Often these remarks are made by seemingly good and kind people who believe they are working with God. But their behaviour is the antithesis of what the Master teaches.
I remember as a child wondering if Jesus was just a moraliser and do-gooder or whether there was really something tangible and demonstrable in his teachings. He was saying in effect "If you are sick, God is your health. If you are unhappy, God is your love. If you are insecure, God is your abundance." Health, happiness and prosperity are the manifestation, the reflection, of spiritual reality. The Master goes further - he says that this spiritual reality already constitutes you, is inseparable from you: "The kingdom of God is within you."
But you look at the person with a "terminal" condition - I have seen so many of them - and the intellect says that this contradicts the presence of God. You think of the many millions who are starving and dying of malnutrition and you ask "Where is He?" You look at the lovelessness in the homes of so many couples and wonder what happened to God's love. I quite often am called upon to be referee in family disputes and find the visciousness that has built up between partners and between parents and children unbelievable. They say to me "I need this, I want that, I must have such-and-such" and I say "You ARE it. You are myriad ideas, God-ideas. The whole Universe is within you, the whole, not just a fragment."
In its own terminology science is now teaching, as we have always taught, that there is no separation between the things that make up existence. There is no "God and..." There is only God AS Intelligence, as Love, as Power. There is only one Presence in the whole universe, seen and unseen, and we are metaphorically swimming in It, in this Divine intelligence with Its myriad ideas. But because of our ignorance and early conditioning we have built up a consciousness of separation and now accept the consequences as the will of God.
Some years ago I was on the board of a hospital for the chronically ill. Many were barely aware of their circumstances, some were completely paralysed, some would lie there with mouths open, spittle running down, uttering distressing noises. But among them were also many to whom I could talk, who understood and could reply. Of those who claimed some religious background I would ask "Is this the will of God?" Some would reply in effect "Yes. You see I am a sinner and this is my punishment. I deserve it. Perhaps when I pass out of the body and go to the other side - if there is another side - I will be set free." To all of these I replied "You have known me now for a long time. What do you think my will is for you? Do you think I am satisfied to see you suffering and knowing you think you are paying for your faults? Do I sit beside you and console you by saying 'Never mind, just hang on, it will not be long before you pass out into freedom'?" You know I am not like this, and I am but a mite of a mite of the Macrocosm, of Divine intelligence, of Love. Love goes out to you, longing, longing, longing to restore you to the consciousness and expression of health and peace, but because of your conditioning you reject It.
All day long, silently or aloud, we are speaking the word. We are exercising our "dominion over the works of Thy hands": for better or for worse. Every word, from its resonance in our brains, sets up vibrations that go out into the universe. We think it takes time for these vibrations to travel but time is our condition, it is not a condition of Universal Mind. Every word we think, or speak or even hold unconsciously, already reaches to infinity. There is no separation, no division between "here" and "there". We are not flotsam and jetsam. We are expressions of God. We have dominion over all creation.
Therefore I must listen to myself. Out of the fullness of my heart what am I declaring - peace for my mind, happiness for my heart, health for my body, security for my affairs? Because whatever I am declaring will faithfully be made manifest for me.
People do not grasp the message that the Master has been giving us for so long. He gives us a way of living, a way of demonstrating. He does not teach moralising and do-gooding. He says "This is what you do, this is how you do it, and this will be the result." We are not weaklings - we are God's temples on this plane of consciousness. How are you glorifying this Presence? What are you radiating? What are you reflecting? For even the fearful will see precisely what you are and who you are, will see your consciousness of God-ness or your consciousness of separation.
Nothing is either good or bad but thinking (with feeling) makes it so. It all starts in consciousness: Do my ideas appear through conditioned intellect and feelings or through Universal Mind and Soul? What fills my cup - livingness or nothingness? Paul tells us to "have that mind in you that was in Jesus-Christ", the mind that is not cognizant of appearances. The Christ-mind sees through appearances to the God-ness of the situations or the person. Everybody is in the presence of God, the presence of good. In reality you cannot separate God from His expression. The traditional view is entirely wrong of God as a man-like being whom we should fear and to whom we should confess what terrible, horrible people we are, and beg for forgiveness which he may or may not give.
Our heavenly Father says of each and every one of us "Behold My beloved child, My reflection, in whom I am well pleased." He does not see error, "sin", or negation in you. He sees only Himself, just as if you look into Light you cannot see darkness, if you look into Love you cannot see hatred, if you look into Beauty you cannot see ugliness, if you look into Purity you cannot see any pollution. Do you understand? What are you seeing as real? What are you thinking as truth? How do you feel about it? What are you declaring from the fullness of your heart? How do you react?
"But it is so hard..." you say. God replies "My strength is sufficient. My presence overcomes the world. The cause that is too hard you shall bring to Me and I will hear it." Practice it again and again in your mind and in your heart. There is always a way out of difficulty, always a door open to His kingdom. There is always the Power to take you the extra yard, to uphold you, to protect you, to bless you. You do not have to shout in the dark. He is nearer to you than hands and feet, closer to you than breathing. But you must set Him free.
This hall is full of God-temples this afternoon, each one radiating Him with different nuance, a different degree of consciousness, yet one spiritual Life constitutes all of you, is present through all of you, is not more in you and less in me. But we must be aware of It. We must accept It. We must release It.
I cannot fully tell you How saddening it is to see certain families - the effect parents have on their children and the wounds these children will carry forward. The children are insecure, do not know what to do. I say to every young parent: What are you seeing, what are you thinking, what are you saying - from the heart? Remember this is not only going through the person with whom you are in contact but through the whole universe, instantly.
God has only one church - the whole universe seen and unseen. He says to us "You are welcome. It is yours. Use it with love - it is free of charge." We walk different pathways but God is as much in you as in me, for He is All-presence.
Today make this your affirmation: "I am the voice of God, the voice of Love, and Harmony, and Peace." Let it become one with the whole universal vibration of Love, Which frees all humanity from fear.
