Source p. 270, Oct / Nov 2005 - The Path of TruthDo you remember the words of the Master "Whatever you ask in my name, I will do it, that the Father may be glorified in the Son"? Now, if I know you, and I think I do, many of you in your hearts feel you have asked sincerely in faith, and to the best of your ability you have lived in tune with God and the spiritual law. Yet, when things apparently do not come right for you, you begin to question and doubt. You say "I have asked in his name all day long but nothing seems to happen. Surely there must be something wrong with God or with the name in which I am asking."
What does asking in his name mean? Do I just say "In the name of Christ, please, God, give me health (or happiness or prosperity)." No, it does not mean that at all. I can get down on my knees and beg and supplicate, and I can go out and do all kinds of good works and use good words and devote my time and attention to the service of God through humanity, and still nothing will happen. Asking in his name means asking in his consciousness, that is in his state of mind and heart. If you shall ask anything of God in the consciousness of love and faith it shall be given you. Not only shall it be given you in the way that you ask but in a measure that is heaped up, pressed down, shaken together and running over.
There is no human being in this world who can have anything at all unless he believes in the particular good he desires. There was a time long ago when I used to say to God "Give me this and I will do that for You. If you give me so much money I will do this and I will go there and devote myself to Your service in the name of Christ." But God is not a personality that can be drawn into contracts. We cannot give Him five Rand and say "Now, God, I expect You to give me a hundred Rand." It does not work that way. To behave in that spirit would show that we have not the true consciousness of love and faith.
We are the temples of the living God. These bodies that we see here are the manifestation of God. Although you may not be aware of it, you are now filled from the centre, that is from the innerness of your being, to the circumference, to the totality of your body and affairs, with His presence of life, joy, health and opulence. But you do not yet know that. That is why we in the School are trying to make you aware of the Truth that now, in being in you, is the presence of God. He works in and through you for Himself. So, when you ask in the Christ-consciousness, you ask unselfishly; for to ask God for anything that could bring unhappiness to any other being is absolutely useless. When I ask anything of God, that is when I rightly interpret my inner desire, I say "Father, let this particular quality of good manifest in me at the right time, and let it be done in Your way, not mine."
I have learnt over these years of trying to practice the presence of God that He is always conversant with my needs, but not my lacks. He does not recognise my poverty, unhappiness or sickness, but is already the Substance of good trying to express Itself fully from the spiritual realm, through the mental and emotional, into the physical. I can say with absolute faith and with complete conviction "Let Your will be done for me, Father," not in this or that particular way because, if I try in my ignorance to dictate the channels by which I expect Him to help me, I will almost certainly be blocking His flawless demonstration.
In dealing with God, I am dealing with the Presence that is all the Power and all the Knowledge in the universe, and I can trust Him fully. If my child comes to me and says "Daddy, will you do this for me, but I want it done in this particular way" and I can see faults in the child's reasoning, I will say to him "I will do it like that if you wish, but there are certain snags. It is not the best way - you will be disappointed. Let me do it in a way that satisfies you and makes you happy." And because my child, I hope, trusts me, he leaves the matter entirely in my hands, knowing that I care for him and will protect him from unhappiness as far as I am able. In working with God, can we not trust Him with the same childlike faith?
Soul within us chooses certain lessons to learn, experiences through which we must pass, and we cannot evade them. In our lives are problems which we have brought with us. I am not now referring to the physical being, because it has not had time to bring these problems into its life. I refer to the infinite Intelligence Which is God, That exists through all planes of consciousness. It has brought on to this plane, through this particular body, certain experiences necessary to Its own purposes. It wants not only to be taken up fully in this particular consciousness, but It desires to express Its dominion through this particular manifestation of Itself - you and me.
Throughout the Judeo-Christian Bible we find that those who achieved anything worthwhile were taken through the fires of affliction, or so it appeared to be. But did they lose anything by it? Did their experience not give them a greater consciousness of the presence of God? Did they not develop their faith and the understanding of their true dominion?
No matter how fearful I may feel in the pit of my stomach, if I keep on affirming the Truth, telling myself there is nothing to fear, ultimately I shall begin to believe it, because I am building into my mind and heart the opposite of fear, namely faith, faith that no person, condition or thing can harm me. I am cultivating the awareness that God is actively expressing in and through me for my highest good and opening the channels to release it.
Your particular problem is the standard through which you have to pass, and it is necessary for your growth. Without that experience you could not possibly develop. God's purpose could not be fulfilled through you. I do not like such experiences any more than you, but I know that I must have them. I have only a certain consciousness of God at the moment, and there is tremendous room for expansion. As in courage I follow this path, God takes care of my every need. The essential thing we must realise is always to ask in the Christ-consciousness. Would God-as-man deprive any person of some good in order that another should benefit? Would He close His eyes to hurt? When we wholeheartedly desire good for others, then through us will manifest the blessings which are the natural gifts from God to us.
Asking in the Christ-consciousness I have never known to fail. I have never found Him withholding any good. I find myself ashamed if I descend to asking "Why do You do this to me? Why should this experience come into my life?" Always I realise that without this experience I would not have achieved the added good. Infinite Intelligence knows the end from the beginning. It sees all your solutions, never your problems. The more you err to the left the more It brings you back to the right. It does not know anything of a negative or "evil" nature.
You will discover, as you progress in Truth by perfecting yourself spiritually, mentally, emotionally and physically, that you will not criticise people so easily. You will see shadows in their lives, but you will recognise them only as shadows. And when you direct the light of Truth on to them, and steadfastly hold it there, only Truth shall be reflected back. There will be no room in you for condemnation, you will no longer be seeing yourself as in a mirror, your own faults and shortcomings reflected in your friends and enemies.
We have to start the work of growth in ourselves. Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness - right thinking, feeling and acting - and all the good shall be added, as much as you require, and always to share and to spare.
Is that worthwhile working for - to have the knowledge that not only are all your needs abundantly fulfilled, but that you are an inspiring example to others of the fulfilment of the God in Whom you believe? They are all seeking, hoping and praying for something on which they can build their lives, and by your life and works you can show them what it is.
God is jealous, not in the accepted sense, but we do not contact Him when we put some other so-called power before Him. You are going through a period now where, by setting the example of faith in God only, you are helping others. And much faith is required of you and me. Let us then make up our minds that He is all the Power and therefore nothing adverse can touch us, that He is all the Knowledge, the very Presence of Good amidst so-called evil. That is the meaning of the Christ-consciousness, for the Christ is the symbol of perfection, of overcoming, of Love, of All-power. This is the consciousness, the awareness, the state of mind and heart, of the loving Presence of God that is in, through, and about us always. Be like children and accept it.
The real student of Truth glorifies God in his daily life. He is not afraid of persons or circumstances. What a sense of freedom to know that God and I are the majority, to know that nothing can interpose between us and our God-self, and that we shall receive all the good when we ask in the Christ-consciousness of Love and faith!
